Since baseball season is around the corner, I wanted to look at the best players by OPS the past 2 years and whether they were increasing or decreasing. Here's a little viz that shows that along with being able to take a look at their career and what makes up their OPS.
500 Homerun Club
Wanted to see what the impact of the steroid era had on the 500 homers club. Seems that the list would not be the same. The steroid era had such an effect on baseball, I would argue it might have also saved the game. The Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa home run race was the best baseball television of those years.
Rich Data, Poor Data
Great article by Nate Silver on why sports analytics is much better than other "real life" analytics.
I've always been such a baseball stat nerd. I remember playing stats only baseball games since I was a young kid, which might have been a precursor to my professional life.
Where DO HR's Come From?
Yasiel Puig, The Next Bo Jackson?
I have heard comparisons of the Dodgers new phenom, Yasiel Puig, to the great Bo Jackson. While they both look similar, I believe Yasiel will surpass anything Bo ever did in baseball. He has all the tools that Bo had, but he is a much better natural hitter. He can hit to all fields, he can fight off pitches where he is fooled and makes better contact in general.
He sure is fun to watch.
